A volunteer repair team assembled in South East Portland to offer free repairs of small appliances, bikes, jewelry, and clothing. Repair PDX launched in May 2013 to “organize repair cafés – free events that bring volunteers who like to fix things together with people who have broken items that need fixing.”

Does compost made from biosolids (human waste/"sewer sludge") perform the same way as compost made from food scraps ("food waste"), chicken and cow manure, yard trimmings ("green waste") or MSW (compost derived from mixed trash)?

JetBlue leads the industry in uniform recycling

Late in September, JetBlue's crew members did something new with their old uniforms. The company issued new uniforms and took a leadership position in their industry by asking their crew members to give their old uniforms--about eight pieces of clothing per person--to recycling and reuse efforts. Part of the catalyst was the 12.5 million tons of perfectly good fabric that ends up in landfills each year. The other motivator was the airline industry's large carbon footprint, and the clear need to do something about it.

A new normal for furniture: 3D-printed, local, recyclable, biomimicking

Lilian van Daal designed a chair prototype that she hopes will solve the problems inherent in traditional composite furniture. Her single-material chair was inspired by the cell structure of plants and manufactured using a 3D printer.

Recycling old car batteries into low-cost solar cells

MIT professors Angela M. Belcher and Paula T. Hammond and a small team of researchers have proposed a system to harvest material found in old lead-acid car batteries and to recycle it into photovoltaic solar panels.
